An introduction to Glenkerry House

 

What is Glenkerry House?

Glenkerry Co-operative Housing Association (GCHA), or Glenkerry House, is a self-run, independent co-operative housing association in Poplar, East London. Comprising 75 flats and four maisonettes, Glenkerry House is a 14-storey building that was completed 1977-78. Members of the association own their own flats but share responsibility in the running of the organisation and the building as a whole, including proactive and reactive governance and maintenance.

Part of the Brownfield Estate, Glenkerry House has been managed by its residents from the beginning - first under the Greater London Council, and then under the care of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Since 2019, GCHA has taken over most of the responsibilities previously met by Tower Hamlets.

GCHA is registered with its regular as a housing association, initially registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965, now superseded by the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014.

What makes us different?

Glenkerry House is regarded as a prime model for co-operative building management, embracing a community feel through committee and social activity. Flats and maisonettes are bought and sold at a discounted price, calculated as half the market value, and so are much more affordable than properties on the open market of a similar location. All flats are sold through the co-operative, and successful applicants are added to a waiting list before being assigned a property fit for their requirement.
